Am I just reading my hopes into it that Tenra includes eerily beautiful flights of youkai, tragic priestesses, and monks who are also monsters? I also second SHIROW Masamune's Orion; it's definitely of the same stuff. I agree that Gunnm would be a good set, and the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. First half is a little bit light and humorous...then everything goes to hell. I would also suggest Battle Angle Alita. It has solid character growth and excellent fight scenes. ...Those are probably the only manga that I can think of that are favorites of mine and fit the action drama feel your looking for.
